Designer Crabs...
I’m not sure how Hermit crabs got the name Hermit. They are actually gregarious and like to hang-out together.
Hermit crabs are great for kids from 5 to 50, and very popular with college students living in dorms. They are easy to keep, inexpensive, clean and don’t carry disease, and are very entertaining. They love to climb—a small stick found in your yard will do. A small container is all the room they need. You can keep them singly or with a friend or two...remember they do like to hang-out. With proper care they will live to the ripe old crab age of 20 years. Did I mention they only cost around $5.00?
Here are some tips for keeping them healthy and happy—
- Provide extra shells for them to grow into.
- Bathe in room temperature water once or twice a week
- Keep in a warm (70-75 degree) environment
- Promote exercise by adding wood or coral to climb on
- Serve a balanced diet and fresh water daily (they like fruits and vegetables, and premixed hermit crab food available at your local pet store)
